KIOWA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Because of the move to the Courthouse, during July, the Kiowa Co. Health Dept. will not have Open clinic days on Tuesdays. Please call ahead to make appointments for any services you need during July.

GREENSBURG RECREATION COMMISSION
· 8-man Tackle Football: 3rd – 6th grades, Meeting July 6th at County Meeting trailer.
· Youth Basketball Camp: Kindergarten – 5th grade. July 6th – 8th. Greensburg Gym. $10 fee.
· Back to School Swimming: Going to Rock River Rapids in Derby. $8 per child. 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
· Youth Football Camp: 2nd – 6th grades. July 21st – 23rd. $10 fee. Greensburg Football Field.

COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE OFFERS LICENSES
The Kiowa County Clerk’s Office is now able to issue Hunting and Fishing licenses. Additionally, they can process boat registrations and renewals.

Subsequently, the Courthouse offices are scheduled to be closed July 13th – 17th to move into the new offices of the courthouse.

STARS OF HOPE
On June 3rd, the Greensburg 4-Hers picked up the Stars of Hope signs throughout Greensburg and began placing them in the Livestock Pavilion on the new fairgrounds in accordance with the New York Says Thank You plans.

With the help of some volunteers, the 4-Hers were able to place 96 of the original 220 stars in the barn. If you have picked up a star for safe keeping, could you please return it to the Kiowa County Extension Office as we would like to place all of the stars in the pavilion.

KIOWA COUNTY FAIR
The Kiowa County Fair Board has scheduled the 2009 4-H and Free Fair for July 27th – 29th. The 4-H Style Review and King/Queen contest will be on Tuesday, July 21st. The Horse Show will be held on Saturday, July 25.

Watch for more details as the fair gets closer! Fair Books will be available soon.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
The First United Methodist Church in Greensburg is planning “Crocodile Dock”, the 2009 Vacation Bible School program. All children ages 3 – 5th grade (having just completed) are invited to participate in the program.

The VBS program will be held on July 13 – 17 from 6:30 - 8:45 p.m. Please contact Mary Mayhew at 620-723-3338 to sign-up for the program.

FARMERS MARKET
The Greensburg Farmers Market is back. The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items. Come down to Davis Park each Saturday until September 26th from 8 – 11 a.m.!

GREENTOWN TOURS OFFERED
Summer Tour Schedule for GreenTours:
Monday – Friday: 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Tours last an hour and cost $5 per person, with a $10 minimum. This would be a great activity for your out-of-town company. Call if you have questions 620-723-2790.

The Kiowa County Master Gardeners will be hosting Plant Problem Clinics the last Saturday of each month at the Farmer’s Market. The June clinic will be June 27th!

The Master Gardeners will be available to help diagnose problems with turf, vegetables, trees and fruit production. Bring down your horticulture questions and get help from trained gardeners.

KIOWA COUNTY UNITED GROUND BREAKING
The Kiowa County United Building will be breaking ground for the new facility on Saturday, May 23rd at 11 a.m. The location of the facility will be at 100 South Main Street.

GREEENSBURG ALUMNI PICNIC
The GHS Alumni Picnic will be at noon, on May 23rd, at Davis Park. All GHS Alums who sign in at the registration table, will be given a ticket to present to Tina & Jay White, at their concession stand - and their lunch will be paid for by an anonymous GHS Alum. PEOPLES BANK GROUNDBREAKING
The Peoples Bank will have a Groundbreaking Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29th, at 102 S. Oak St. (building site). Following the groundbreaking, we will have a COMMUNITY BBQ from 11-1 at The Peoples Bank temporary bank location (303 E. Kansas Ave.)

WHEAT PLOT TOUR
The Kiowa County Wheat Plot Tour is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th and will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the test plot site. The plot is located 1 mile east and ½ mile south of Haviland. The tour is being sponsored by Kiowa County Extension and the Farmers Coop of Haviland.

Kent Martin, K-State Research and Extension Agronomist will be present to discuss the test varieties.

THE BIGGEST LOSER, SEASON 2
The Lighthouse Worship Center will begin their second season of “The Biggest Loser” on Wednesday, May 13th. Anyone within our community is welcome to participate. The weight-loss program will run from May 13th through July 29th. Weekly weigh-ins will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

PLANET GREEN TV SERIES ON DVD
You can buy the DVD set of the first season of Planet Green's "Greensburg" series at the GreenTown office. The 4-disc set containing the 13 episodes of the show retails for $45.

GREENTOWN OFFICE NEWS
GreenTown is the drop-off site for unwanted cell phones; these will be donated to domestic violence programs. You may also recycle small batteries and portable electronics.

Residents who have not yet received their free e-cloths can pick these up at the office. The company who donated these cleaning kits call the cloths a "revolutionary way to clean" using only water. You can check out their website at www.e-cloth.com.

The GreenTown store is open Monday through Friday from 10-5. On Saturday, May 23 there will be special business hours to accommodate folks coming in for Memorial Day weekend; we will be open after the parade until 4 p.m. For more information please call the office at 723-2790.

COMMUNITY GARDENS
A community gardens area has been established for residents of Greensburg who do not have space for a garden. There are garden plots (15’x15’) available on a first come basis. The plots are $10.00 each. The ground will be worked and ready for planting. Water will be provided. Call the Extension Office for your garden plot at 620-723-2156.

FARMERS MARKET
The Greensburg Farmers Market is back! The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items.

We are looking for vendors. Vendors are responsible for bringing their own display tables and collecting their own sales tax. Each seller agrees to pay $5 for their booth space for doing business at the Market. If you have something to sell, please contact the Kiowa County Extension Office at 723-2156.

If you are a consumer who is looking to support local food production, here is a great opportunity! Show your neighbors that you are interested in eating locally, saving on gasoline, and keeping the local economy healthy.

TREES FOR RURAL RESIDENTS
Residents who have rebuilt their homes in rural Kiowa County can contact the Kiowa County Conservation District office at 620-723-2146 for assistance on purchasing up to 5 trees for your home. Trees must be signed up for by May 15th and planted by June 1st to qualify for the grant money.

THE BIGGEST LOSER, SEASON 2
The Lighthouse Worship Center will begin their second season of “The Biggest Loser” on Wednesday, May 13th. Anyone within our community is welcome to participate. The weight-loss program will run from May 13th through July 29th. Weekly weigh-ins will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

WHEAT PLOT TOUR
The Kiowa County Wheat Plot Tour is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th. The plot is located 1 mile east and ½ mile south of Haviland. The tour is being sponsored by Kiowa County Extension and the Farmers Coop of Haviland.

COMMUNITY GARDENS
A community gardens area has been established for residents of Greensburg who do not have space for a garden. There are garden plots (15’x15’) available on a first come basis. The plots are $10.00 each. The ground will be worked and ready for planting. Water will be provided. Call the Extension Office for your garden plot at 620-723-2156.

FARMERS MARKET
The Greensburg Farmers Market is back! The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items.

We are looking for vendors. Vendors are responsible for bringing their own display tables and collecting their own sales tax. Each seller agrees to pay $5 for their booth space for doing business at the Market. If you have something to sell, please contact the Kiowa County Extension Office at 723-2156.

If you are a consumer who is looking to support local food production, here is a great opportunity! Show your neighbors that you are interested in eating locally, saving on gasoline, and keeping the local economy healthy.

Jerry Moran's Visit to Greensburg

MORAN TO VISIT KIOWA COUNTY ON ANNUAL LISTENING TOUR
Will be in Greensburg to Visit with Area Residents

Congressman Jerry Moran will visit Kiowa County this week during his annual Listening Tour. Moran is visiting communities in each of the 69 counties of the First Congressional District.

Moran will be in Greensburg at 547 Arts Center, 204 W. Wisconsin, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 2, 2009, for his Kiowa County Town Hall tour stop. Area residents are invited to attend.

The issues Moran focuses on and the work he does in Washington, D.C., is based on what he learns in the conversations he has with Kansans during his tour stops.

ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
An Arbor Day Celebration will be held on Friday, April 24th at 11 a.m. at the Courthouse Gazebo in Greensburg. Everyone is invited to attend.

ARBORETUM TO BE ESTABLISHED
The Kiowa County Commission has agreed to establish the Kiowa County Arboretum on the new Fairgrounds. The trees to be planted in the arboretum have been selected by the Greensburg Tree Board in conjunction with the Kansas Forest Service. The Arboretum will be planted along the walking path that was proposed in the design of the new fairgrounds in the Long Term Recovery Plan.

The Greensburg Tree Board and the Kiowa County Master Gardeners along with 14 students from Fort Hays State University will begin planting the first 80 trees at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 24th. The planting will be finished on Saturday, April 25th. We are asking anyone interested in helping to meet at the fairgrounds.

TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING
The Kiowa County Extension is co-hosting 2 Tractor Safety Trainings for youth 13 to 15 years of age. The training will be held on May 2 at Dodge City Community College.

2nd ANNUAL CANNONBALL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 2nd Annual 4-man Scramble will be held on Saturday, May 2nd with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Eighteen teams will be allowed to enter with a $160 per team registration. Lunch will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd teams.

MERITRUST TO BRING TREES
Meritrust Bank, formerly BWCU, will be in Greensburg on May 2nd to provide 100 free trees to residents within the city limits of Greensburg who lost their homes due to the May 2007 tornado. This will be the third time the bank has come to Kiowa County to provide trees.

COMMUNITY POT LUCK DINNER
A Community Pot Luck Dinner will be Friday, April 24 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Iroquois Center Coffee House in the maintenance building behind the Iroquois Center for Human Development, Inc. at 610 East Grant in Greensburg. Area residents are encouraged to bring a covered dish and enjoy lunch with their friends and neighbors. Utensils, coffee, and tea will be furnished.

INCUBATOR GRAND OPENING – Time Change
The Grand Opening of the Sun Chips Business Incubator will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24th. The CBS Early Show will be there to help celebrate the Big Event!

SCREENING OF GREENSBURG, SEASON 2
Planet Green would like to invite all residents to a Sneak Peak of the premiere episode of season 2 of GREENSBURG on Thursday, April 23rd at 6 p.m. at the Greensburg School Gymnasium. Sandwiches and light refreshments will be served at 6:00 p.m. with the screening beginning at 6:30 p.m.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH DEDICATION
The First Baptist Church of Greensburg, KS will have a dedication service at 10:45 am May 3, 2009 with an open house from 1-3 pm, all are welcome to come and tour our new worship center.

GreenTown will be hosting a community supper on Saturday, May 2nd. There will be a presentation of the 1st Annual Green Initiative Awards to individuals, businesses and others who have made contributed to the green rebuilding effort. We hope you can join us.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
A group from the U.S. Green Building Council, Kansas City Chapter will be coming to Greensburg May 1-2 to help out during the 2nd anniversary weekend. GREENSBURG ALUMNI BANQUET
The GHS Alumni Banquet will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the gym. Tickets are $12.50 and can be purchased at Greensburg State Bank. The deadline is May 15, 2009. 2ND ANNIVERSARY SCHEDULE

· Long Term Recovery is located in the gray trailer west of the courthouse (205 S. Oak).
· County Commission meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and the last working day of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Kiowa County Meeting trailer located at 219 S. Oak.
· South Landfill hours are Monday – Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The landfill is now charging $3.50 per cubic yard for debris.

GREENSBURG CITY GOVERNMENT
· City Hall Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.

· Greensburg Planning Commission meetings are held on Wednesdays when needed at 7:30 p.m. in the Kiowa County Meeting trailer, located at 219 S. Oak. Check with City Hall for upcoming meeting dates.
· Greensburg Trash Routes are running as North/South streets on Mondays and East/West streets on Fridays. Trash must be out by 8 a.m. or it will not be picked up.
· Big Well Gift Shop hours are Monday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The phone number for the gift shop is 620-723-4102.

HAVILAND CITY GOVERNMENT
