Kiowa County/Greensburg Update August 16 - 22
KIOWA COUNTY
Public Information Update
Sunday, August 16, 2009 – Saturday, August 22, 2009
PAYING IT FORWARD
Over the past few years many of us have received a hand up following the May 4, 2007 tornado. One of the greatest impacts for many people was the build of the Kiowa County Livestock Pavilion last September, when over 300 volunteers (including New York firefighters) from across the nation came to Greensburg to help build a barn in 4 days. Although the weather did not permit us to get much accomplished on the barn, friendships were formed, lives were touched, and for some like Charlie Vitchers healing took place.
In affiliation with the New York Says Thank You Foundation (NYSTY), the Kansas 4-H program was able to get almost half of the cost of the facility donated. Our community was truly blessed by the goodness of many.
This September 3-6th is an opportunity for us to “Pay It Forward” during the NYSTY annual build. The project this year is to build a chapel out of trees destroyed during a tornado that hit the Little Sioux Boy Scout Camp in Iowa. During the closing ceremony, a tree will be planted in honor of Beverly Volz due to a generous donation by Norman Volz.
To help organize how many people will be traveling from Greensburg to Iowa, the Extension Office will be serving as a contact point for people to call. We will take names, help coordinate rides, and help find housing for anyone from Kiowa County who would be interested in being part of the 2009 NYSTY build. Please call 620-723-2156 by August 21st to sign up so arrangements can be made.
