Painting Workshop on Saturday, September 26th, 2009 at the 5.4.7 Arts Center taught by guest artist and teacher Tricia Spencer!

Children’s Acrylic Painting Class for grades K-8th
10-11:30 am
$10 per student, all materials provided
Students will develop skills for making expressive paintings based on their experiences working with their natural environment. The subject matter will include still life objects, and their own feelings and emotions. Color, texture, layering techniques and expressive brush work will assist students in emphasizing the descriptive elements in their paintings. Composition and the use of light are essential to understanding how to work with acrylic. Different colors reflect different light and this is important to understanding how to create an expressive painting. Students will learn to see how these elements can be transmitted to their work to create depth and dimension in their paintings. We will be examining the world through their paintings. These experiences working with acrylics will assist students in understanding their own thoughts and feelings while providing them with the necessary skills to tell their stories in their paintings.

Adult Watercolor Workshop
$35 per person
Students must provide supplies for adult class. Please contact for supply list. Approximate cost of supply list is $15.
This class will be focused on introducing students to exciting still life subjects and, possibly some Plein Air Painting (painting from life outside) depending on our light and weather. Students will be introduced to specific techniques for applying color, texture, graded washes, wet into wet, and expressive brush work used to create dynamic paintings while maintaining the wonderful transparency that makes watercolor such a creative medium. Demonstrations will also assist students to find their own individual way of working with watercolor. Feel free to experiment with the wonderful light and transparent effects of this exciting medium. We are looking forward to welcoming you on this exciting journey into the world of Watercolor! For more information on Tricia Spencer, please visit her website:

Greensburg GreenTown is sponsoring a home design contest with, which provides free house plans online for people who are interested in building sustainable, energy-efficient homes. Together we have put together a competition to see who can come up with a house plan that is best suited for Greensburg, using one of three cutting-edge wall systems. We have had 236 people – from all around the world – enter the contest, and there are some beautiful, creative options to choose from. The winning home may be built in Greensburg as part of our Chain of Eco-Homes Project, joining the concrete Silo house as a demonstration home.

The public voting period is open until September 30, and anyone can vote for their favorite. GreenTown is especially interested in having local folks weigh in with their picks, because we’d like the winners to be a good match for our community. Go to the GreenTown website ( and click on the button on the right-hand side that says “The Chain of Eco-Homes Competition”. The final selections will be made in October with our panel of judges from throughout the country; the combined public vote will count as one judge’s vote.

The grand prize winner will receive $10,000, and two $1,000 awards will be made to the runners-up, so the stakes are high. In addition to, GreenTown has been working closely with AT&T, who, along with CISCO, are providing the technology to make this judging process happen. Special equipment will be installed in the Kiowa County Courthouse to enable our local judges (Greensburg City Administrator Steve Hewitt and GreenTown Board Chair Mary Melton) to participate in real time with the other judges from around the country for the final vote on October 7. This telepresence technology will remain a permanent fixture in the Courthouse after the contest is over. This is a generous gift by these two corporations.

If you have any questions about the voting process or the contest in general, call the GreenTown office at 723-2790.
